Esta nova série de desenhos marca o regresso de Ana Maria Tavares a uma prática que não exercia desde 1996. O desenho sempre interessou a artista, desde os primeiros anos na universidade onde criou grandes instalações com murais orgânicos capazes de cobrir salas inteiras. Apolíneo e Dionisíaco, como duas vertentes distintas da prática da artista, desde a prática extremamente controlada e meticulosa de algumas obras, até estes desenhos onde o gesto é importantíssimo, e o desenho se afirma em toda a sua liberdade. As mãos se movem livremente e o gesto indica à artista como se mover e o que fazer. A estreita relação entre desenho e natureza transparece no nome da série Nature Sauvage, justamente porque, como na natureza, não há controle sobre o gesto e a marca. O gesto primitivo e os movimentos fluídos evocam os movimentos dos galhos das árvores no inverno, onde os volumes desnudos deixam espaço para o esqueleto se mover e remetem à abstração, ou mesmo a algas e vegetação aquática capazes de se mover sinuosamente.

This new series of drawings marks Ana Maria Tavares’ return to a practice she had not pursued since 1996. Drawing has always interested the artist, since her early years in university where she created large installations with organic murals capable of covering entire rooms. Apollonian and Dionysian, like two different aspects of the artist’s practice, from the extremely controlled and meticulous practice of some works, to these drawings where the gesture is extremely important, and drawing asserts itself in all its freedom. The hands move freely, and the gesture indicates to the artist how to move and what to do. The close relationship between drawing and nature is apparent in the name of the series, Nature Sauvage, precisely because, like in nature, there is no control over the gesture and the mark. The primitive gesture and fluid movements evoke the movements of tree branches in winter, where the denuded volumes leave space for the skeleton to move and refer to abstraction, or even to algae and aquatic vegetation capable of moving sinuously.
