On the Visual Purity (from the Artifactual Series), 2015

For many years I have been focusing on the legacy of modern architecture in Brazil and made works which aims at creating a critical perspective in relation to its much-celebrated ideals of purity. Connected to a strong belief in progress which, in a part led to many great aesthetic achievements, they also enabled architecture to become a strong tool to disseminate exclusion and segregation. Modern Architecture in Brazil is a perfect example of the most appraised achievements in the field but has also propagated much of the social problems we face today.

On the Visual Purity (from the Artifactual Series) is structured by the modern grid but mirrored and contaminated by the distortions of its surfaces and the inclusion of a window-like frame leading to a view of one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic building, the Oca at the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo. Its concave and convex surfaces are amplifying lenses which blur the reflection of reality. The Oca building is framed and captured through a window and it appears distorted as in a nightmare.
